Lodging

As a foreign family hosting in such a beautiful and traditional town such as San Juan, our primary objective is to minimize the negative effects of gentrification in the area. We are commited to the continual self-examination and actions necessary to offset the less-than-ideal cultural impacts of a surging influx of tourism.

For this reason, all accomodations we run are locally owned and leased to us on a long term basis. You are supporting not only our family but also Guatemalan families with your visit. For that, we thank you.

The San Juan Lakeview House is a perfect place for individuals or families of up to 7 that are looking for a place to settle in for a bit and take some time to take in local culture and history. Our local staff is so eager to share their knowldge of the area they were born and raised in! We are proud to boast of beautiful views of the lake and will do everything we can to make your stay memorable and pleasant.

Named after the first guest that stayed here, (a fine carpenter from Portland that helped us with the finishings), David's room is a great option for up to 2 people to stay in San Juan. Located on the third level of or Tijax Guesthouse, wake up to the view of the gorgeous sunrise across the lake and take it in with a cup of coffee from it's balcony overlooking the San Juan peer.

Also named after the first guest that stayed here, (a wonderful young woman from Germany that landed up spending several months with our family), Esther's room is a popular option for up to 4 people to stay in San Juan. Top off your night after a day of exploring the lake with a small fire on the balcony overlooking the lake.

Private bathroom, Starlink internet, complimentary coffee made fresh every morning.

The San Pedro "Atitlan Lakeview Terrazza" is a surprisingly large space that can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests. Nestled in a local neighbourhood just a 4 minute walk from the beach and kayak rentals, this is a wonderful option if you are looking to experience life in Guatemala from the inside. As hosts, we live just a few doors up the road along with several of the families offering workshops on our activities list. From Spanish classes to tortilla making workshops or traditional weaving lessons, you are just steps away from them all.

Located downtown San Juan, Los Jardines offers a "homestay" type experience without sacrificing any privacy. The separate home is built on the property of a beautiful local elderly couple that offer a wealth of knowledge. The accomodation was set up in partnership with Don Ranulfo and Donia Clara in efforts to help them with a steady income to sustain their retirement from being educators. However, Don Ranulfo still loves to teach and he's got a beautiful little classroom set up in a gazebo that overlooks the garden...in case you want some Spanish or Tzutujil classes!

Named after an adventurous, travelling French volunteer that reached out right when we were setting up the Tijax Guesthouse, Sophie's room is popular with our budget travellers as it shares a bathroom on the main level of the guesthouse. But don't let that fool you or turn you off of it! Somehow it is the highest rated room of all our accomodation options and the most popular! Can sleep up to 6 people and, as mentioned, is great for those travelling that would like a lower priced room while still enjoying the nice ameneties the common areas offer such as the fire pits, garden, jacuzzi and communal kitchen.

Olga quickly became part of our family as she extended her original one week reservation into 4 months, one week at a time! We absolutely fell in love with the original community that the Tijax Guesthouse gave birth to. Olga was a regular fixture during our inagural months, always there in the mornings, enjoying her coffee and the incredible Atitlan sunrise from the balcony. Neighbouring Sofie's room on the first level, Olga's room can sleep up to 4 guests.

The third room on the main floor of our Tijax Guesthouse in San Juan, Jesus and Maria's room or the "Lakeview Family Room" is another great budget option for families looking to lower their travel costs without sacrificing cleanliness, amazing views or quality. Furnished with 3 double beds, this room sleeps families of 6 and, as the rest of the rooms in the building, was named after our first guests to stay there.

Jesus and Maria visited from the town of Amolonga, Guatemala and inspired the continued growth of our cultural exchange Tijax Guesthouse cummunity dinners.
